School Council

Our School Council plays an important role in giving pupils a voice and helping to make our school and wider community an even better place. Each year, we explore one of the British Values alongside one of our school values every half term, planning projects that allow pupils to put these values into action.

Autumn Term

British Value: Democracy
School Value: Be Involved

During the Autumn Term, our School Council focused on democracy by encouraging everyone in our school community to have their say. Council members spoke with pupils and staff to gather ideas about improvements they would like to see around the school.

From the many suggestions received, we selected three proposals and held a whole-school voting day to coincide with UK Parliament Week. This gave every pupil the opportunity to experience democracy in action by casting their vote.

We were also delighted to welcome Daisy Cooper MP to our school. School Council members prepared thoughtful questions and learnt about her role as a Member of Parliament, how decisions are made, and why it is important for everyone's voice to be heard.

Spring Term

British Value: Mutual Respect and Tolerance
School Value: Be Kind

Our Spring Term project focused on supporting others through kindness and compassion. School Council members consulted with pupils and staff to decide which charities to support. Together, we chose two wonderful organisations: Isabel Hospice, a local hospice providing specialist care, and the Blue Cross Rehoming Centre, which cares for animals in need.

To raise money, we organised a whole-school charity day featuring a cake sale, a book sale using generously donated books, and handmade bookmarks created by the School Council.

The day was an incredible success, raising an amazing £2,000 for our chosen charities. We were also pleased to welcome a representative from Isabel Hospice, who spoke to pupils about the valuable work of the hospice and how fundraising makes a real difference to local families.

Summer Term

British Value: Mutual Respect and Tolerance
School Value: Be Involved and Belong

During the Summer Term, we strengthened our links with the local community by visiting our local church to attend The Gathering, a group for elderly parishioners.

School Council members joined in with prayers and singing before spending time talking with members of the group. They asked questions about their lives, listened to their experiences of growing up, and learnt more about the history of our local community. These visits helped pupils develop respect, empathy and a greater sense of belonging.

We have also continued to care for our school environment by organising litter picks, weeding outdoor areas, and beginning work on our school fruit and vegetable patch. This year we planted pumpkins, which we are looking forward to harvesting in the autumn.

Looking After Our School and Community

Throughout the year, our School Council has worked hard to make a positive difference both within school and beyond. Whether promoting democracy, supporting local charities, building relationships across generations or caring for our environment, our councillors demonstrate our school values every day. We are incredibly proud of their commitment, leadership and enthusiasm as they continue to inspire positive change across our school community.

Aspiration Day

As part of our commitment to inspiring our pupils and encouraging them to dream big, the School Council organised our annual Aspiration Day. We welcomed a range of visitors into school who generously gave their time to talk to the children about their careers, the skills they use in their jobs and the different pathways they took to achieve their goals.

Pupils enjoyed asking questions and learning about the wide variety of opportunities available to them in the future. From hearing about exciting professions to discovering that hard work, resilience and determination can help them achieve their ambitions, the day encouraged everyone to think positively about their own aspirations. It was a fantastic opportunity to broaden horizons, raise ambitions and inspire our young people to believe that they can achieve great things.
